Career dreams among health care students: I want to make a difference

Abstract: There is a continuous increase in demand for health services in most countries because people who are older are living longer. Health care for people who are older is not, generally, an attractive career option for undergraduate health professionals. “…The findings suggest that orthopaedic nurses who have preconceived beliefs about anticipating difficulty when they care for people with dementia are less inclined to be interested to work with patients with dementia in a holistic manner. This finding compliments other studies that have investigated attitudes of other acute care staff about caring for patients with dementia (Alzheimer’s Society, ), with some suggesting that an origin for negative attitudes may exist because nursing students’ have little exposure to knowledge about geriatrics in general, and few plan to work with people who are older in the future (Øster, Munk, & Henriksen, ).…”

“…A recent study reports that self‐realisation is important for nurses to remain in nursing practice (Kristoffersen, 2019). Research indicates that nurses seek self‐realisation through work and leave their current position if it limits opportunity for self‐realisation (Côté, 2016; Halter et al, 2017; Øster et al, 2017). Nursing has a high rate of turnover, ranging from 15–44% among countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada (Duffield et al, 2014).…”

“…This dimension re ects the need for selfrealization. One study showed students' career dreams were driven by eagerness to make a difference [30]. However, some students believe that geriatric nursing focuses on basic care and life care and they could hardly nd a sense of accomplishment [31].…”
