Professor Patricia Layzell Ward became Editor of Library Management with the issue of Volume 18 Number 4 in 1997. She has spent the past six years successfully editing this international journal. This short piece recognises the contribution which she has made to the life of this journal during this time. Studies the reasons why people have changed career in order to become members of the library profession. Focuses on the career change decision process. This includes discussion of drift versus active choice, previous career experiences, context of life as a whole, nature of library work and the influence of other people. Measures the amount and nature of satisfaction to be derived from having made the career change. Offers suggestions for the library profession as a whole in marketing itself in order to recruit and properly remunerate skilled and enthusiastic people.
