Caregiver burden in mobile and non‐mobile demented patients: a comparative study

Abstract: the caregivers of the mobile demented patients reported higher burden due to the patients' behavior disturbance compared to those of the non-mobile patients. These findings indicate a need for further development of interventions to prevent behavior disturbances that are especially burdensome for caregivers.

“…As far as the evaluation of risk factors is concerned, we observed greater caregiver burden and collapse in caregiving at home when behavioural disorders were present, which coincided with the findings of other studies (Dunkin and Anderson-Hanley, 1998;Miyamoto et al, 2002;Andrieu et al, 2003;Ankri et al, 2005;Onishi et al, 2005;Takahahi et al, 2005). This was logical in that situations involving aggressivity and behavioural disorders are generally more difficult to handle, not only when patients are at home, but also when they are in institutional care.…”

“…The patients at care level 4 consisted of severely impaired mobile elderly with special needs, while those at care level 5 were nonmobile elderly. The patients’ immobility diminished behavioral disturbance, leading to the attenuation of caregiver burden [28]. In the present study, the restriction of caregiver’s time did not differ between care levels 4 and 5.…”

“…Most of the previous studies [7,8,9,10,26,27,28] sampled from hospital or nursing home patients, which overrepresented severely impaired patients, and thus these studies may overestimate caregiver burden. Even in the community-based study [6], the sample size was not large enough to estimate after adjustment for the potential confounders.…”

“…Specifically, knowing that a care receiver with dementia may get lost is an independent stressor, an extra burden for the caregiver, leading to the onset of symptoms such as depression and/or anxiety (Hope et al, 2001;Miyamoto, Ito, Otsuka, & Kurita, 2002;White, Montgomery, & McShane, 2010).…”
