Caries Prevalence in Children from Valencia (Spain) using ICDAS II criteria, 2010

Abstract: Objectives: To assess the oral health status of the child population and its evolution over the 2004-2010 period. Study Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study of the entire schoolchild population of the Valencia region of Spain was conducted using cluster sampling. Seventy schools were selected. The sample size was 1373 pupils, aged 6, 12 and 15 years. The children were examined in November and December 2010, at their schools, by 6 examiners calibrated in the ICDAS II method. “…The results of the present study demonstrated that decayed primary and permanent teeth constituted a large and considerable proportion of DMFT and dmft indices, so that the proportion of filled teeth in dmft index of 7-year old was as low as 6.4% and in DMFT index of 12-year was 55.55%. A high proportion of decayed teeth observed in the present study is similar to those reported by other studies conducted in other developing and undeveloped countries such as India, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia [ 20 , 29 , 30 ] and is higher than those reported in developed countries such as Israel and Spain [ 31 , 32 ].…”

“…The authors conducting epidemiological studies since the 90s of the last century in other countries have shown steady growth in the referrals of the children to dental surgeries and at the same time lowering the value of average dmf index at patients [11][12][13][14]. Similar regularity was found in our study, in which the average value of dmf index was significantly lower in children presenting for a check than in children who present with a toothache.…”

“…According to the latest epidemiological studies , caries prevalence has been falling in recent decades but, at the same time, a certain rise in pre‐cavitation lesions has appeared. This makes it necessary to change the approach to diagnosing and treating this disease, improving the ability to diagnose incipient lesions that can be treated by remineralizing them and controlling the risk factors, and confining restoration treatment to more advanced lesions .…”

“…The aim was to develop a visual method of detecting caries at as early a stage as possible, and also to detect the severity and level of activity of this disease . The system has a sensitivity of 70–85% and a specificity of 80–90% in both primary and permanent teeth, with the difference depending on the level of training and calibration of the examiners .…”
