CARMA II: A ground vehicle for autonomous surveying of alpha, beta and gamma radiation

Abstract: Surveying active nuclear facilities for spread of alpha and beta contamination is currently performed by human operators. However, a skills gap of qualified workers is emerging and is set to worsen in the near future due to under recruitment, retirement and increased demand. This paper presents an autonomous ground vehicle that can survey nuclear facilities for alpha, beta and gamma radiation and generate radiation heatmaps. New methods for preventing the robot from spreading radioactive contamination using a … Show more

“…This approach enables the construction of highly adaptable radio maps for new scenarios or changes in environmental conditions or AP locations, thereby overcoming the limitations of scalability and laborious data collection typically associated with fingerprint-based methods. Once the mapping process is completed, the second stage involves distributing RPs throughout the mapped area using the RP generation tool [53]. This tool utilizes a dynamically adjusted marker pattern on a 2D grid map within the GUI, as shown in Figure 7.…”

“…The facility was created to remove the challenges associated with working on nuclear sites and provides an intermediate stage for testing RAS in a facility that mirrors obstacles found at Sellafield Ltd. [44]. The SMuRF consisted of Boston Dynamics SPOT with ARM, Agile X Scout 2.0 and mini, Clearpath Jackal (Continuous Autonomous Radiometric Monitoring Assistant (CARMA)) [45], Franka robotic manipulator Arm and DJI Tello Drone. The demonstration of the SMuRF included an analogue environment scenario where UK regulation requires nuclear operators to access and complete characterisation of a site every 3-6 months to assess for radiation levels and asset health monitoring.…”
