Carotid Artery Angioplasty and Stenting for Carotid Stenosis: A Single-Center Experience from Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Purpose: Atherosclerotic stenosis of the extracranial carotid artery accounts for approximately 20% of all strokes. Both carotid artery endarterectomy and carotid artery angioplasty with stenting (CAAS) are recommended for symptomatic patients with 50% or more stenosis or asymptomatic patients with 70% or more stenosis. CAAS is under-reported in Saudi Arabia, as evidenced by a thorough literature search. In this article, we aim to share our experience of CAAS to call for the necessity of conducting more resear… Show more

“…Carotid artery stenosis is a major cause of acute ischemic cerebrovascular events; however, interventional procedures for the secondary prevention of strokes are usually under-utilized. 12 An accurate definition of risk profiles, with an assessment of variables related to the pre-surgical course and elements closely related to the procedure and its outcomes, can be a valuable opportunity for establishing calibrated pathways. Similarly, it can aid in encouraging the implementation of invasive methods in areas where there is a greater need.…”

“…Both carotid artery endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery angioplasty with stenting (CAAS) are recommended for symptomatic patients with 50% or more stenosis or asymptomatic patients with 70% or more stenosis. 4 For the past three decades, carotid artery stenting (CAS), an alternative to CEA, has been used for carotid artery stenosis revascularization. Interventionalists are experiencing increased technical developments in arterial stents and neuroprotection for CAS deployment.…”
