“…It is already known that invasive H. influenzae serotype b (Hib) strains have been replaced by non-typeable H. influenzae in many countries since the introduction of the Hib conjugate vaccines ( Van Eldere et al, 2014 ; Zarei et al, 2016 ; Slack, 2017 ; Slack et al, 2021 ). Also serotypes “a,” “e,” and “f” have been reported in different countries as disease causing serotypes, and are also serotypes found in our study ( Ladhani et al, 2012 ; Palaniappan et al, 2020 ; Slack et al, 2021 ; Reilly et al, 2022 ). In North America, an increase in proportion of serotype “a” has been observed among invasive disease cases ( Tsang and Ulanova, 2017 ; Slack et al, 2021 ; Soeters et al, 2021 ; Ulanova, 2021 ).…”

“…Compared to other Southeast Asia countries, the colonization rate of H. influenzae in our study is also considerably higher. A study in Malaysia showed 14,3% and 4,9% H. influenzae carrier rates in healthy unvaccinated and vaccinated children, respectively [ 20 ]. The Indonesian ministry of health started to include the Hib vaccination in the national vaccination program in 2013; this might have caused the higher carrier rate of H. influenzae in this study since most of our participants were older than 5 years old.…”

“…In Malaysia during the pre-vaccination era, Hib was responsible for about 50% of bacterial meningitis cases in major paediatric centres such as day care centres and nurseries (Hussain et al, 1998). Recently a cross-sectional study of 30 registered childcare centres in Kuala Lumpur reported that all seven non-Malaysian children out of 436 children involved in the study, were H. influenza negative carriers (Palaniappan et al, 2020). Although this disease is not prevalent among migrant population, continuous surveillance must still be conducted on this virus due to inconsistent influenza seasonal peaks so that vaccination and antiviral treatment can be provided efficiently to the susceptible individuals.…”
