Carriage of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in Healthy People: Recognition of Several Risk Groups

Abstract: The increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in hospitalized people and the hospital environment has been thoroughly documented. In contrast, little is known about their presence in the community. However, increasing evidence is showing a high level of carriage in people without infectious signs. Colonized people can later develop infections due to MDR bacteria and may be able to transmit them to susceptible people (the number of which is increasing worldwide), for example, people with comorbidities such… Show more

“…The receptor for stx2 is globotriosyl ceramide which is seen in both swine and humans [ 43 ]. Also, the LT and ST gene was detected both in isolates from swine (29 isolates, 45.3%) and patients (11 isolates, 22.0%), which is associated with neonatal or postweaning diarrhea in pigs and in traveler’s diarrhea in humans [ 44 , 45 ]. There was no common fimbrial adhesin in isolates from both swine and patients.…”

“…These MDR bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Streptococcus pneumoniae , Escherichia coli , Acinetobacter baumannii , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Vibrio parahaemolyticus , Salmonella Typhimurium, Enterococcus faecium , Enterococcus faecalis , Enterobacter spp., etc. [ 36 , 42 , 43 ]. Day by day many other bacteria also increasingly becoming resistant to antibiotics.…”

“…39,40 Many other risk factors were identified to increase the incidence of MDR even in people as carriers, such as travel history to areas endemic with MDR, health occupations, comorbidities including DM and inflammatory bowel disease, immunosuppressive drugs and chemotherapy, AIDS, cystic fibrosis and extreme of ages. [41][42][43][44] Nowadays, worldwide measures are taken to decrease the risk for MDR. 45,46 In the present study, most of the isolates with MDR were Acinetobacter baumannii, which can present into three distinct clinical entities.…”
