This work presents a study of the ammonia air stripping process in a semi-flow batch bubble reactor as a pre-treatment for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill leachate. In order to assess the optimum treatment conditions from a technical and an economic point of view, the research was carried out in the following steps: 1) experimentation in a pilot plant; 2) mathematical model development; and 3) economic analysis. The experimentation showed that it is possible to achieve high ammonia removal efficiencies even without basificant dosage, if temperature is maintained between approximately 60 and 70°C. The development and calibration of a mathematical model permitted the study to determine the treatment efficiency of the process under several operating conditions. The economic analysis has shown that, with a removal efficiency of approximately 70%, it is convenient to work without basificant dosage and at a temperature of 70°C. These conditions can also be considered optimal from a techmcal point of view.

The cascade crossflow packed column is an innovative design that offers the separation advantages of countercurrent flow while avoiding flooding limitations. Liquid and gas crosssectional flow areas and path length in contact with packing may be controlled independently. These features are illustrated by studying the air stripping of methylene chloride (MeCl), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Stripping efficiencies in the cascade crossflow column were generally slightly smaller than in countercurrent flow at equal liquid and gas flow rates. However larger gas-to-liquid ratios were possible in crossflow, permitting larger maximum stripping efficiencies to be attained. The experimental mass transfer coefficients were smaller than predicted by the Onda correlation. Modifications to the gas-phase Onda correlation are proposed that reduce the magnitude of the average deviation between experiment and prediction for 40 tests to about 12%. Experimental values of 38 of 40 tests were within (30% of modified Onda correlation predictions. Additional applications for the cascade crossflow concept are suggested, such as vacuum distillation columns and trickle-bed reactors, which require low pressure drop and/or large gas-to-liquid ratios.

Atividades humanas aceleram o processo natural de eutrofização das águas, favorecendo a floração de algas e cianobactérias. Estes organismos emitem os compostos 2-metilisoborneol (MIB) e geosmina, que conferem gosto e odor de mofo e terra à água. A presença destes compostos se estende à água potável uma vez que os processos convencionais de tratamento são insuficientes para removê-los. Esta pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de avaliar alternativas de processos de tratamento para a remoção de MIB e geosmina da água. Os processos estudados foram aeração em cascata, dessorção por ar e nanofiltração. Os resultados sugerem a possibilidade de remoção quase total de MIB e geosmina da água através do sistema de nanofiltração, enquanto que os processos baseados em aeração e dessorção foram relativamente ineficientes.
