Case-Based Reasoning in Web Break Sensitivity Evaluation in a Paper Machine

Abstract: This paper proposes a new approach for monitoring the the paper web break tendency in modern paper machines. The approach combines linguistic equations and fuzzy logic in a case-based reasoning framework. The development is based on actual mill data and simulations, and early prototyping is used to validate the approach in practice. The system has been tested on two Finnish paper machines with encouraging results showing good possibility for actual mill-scale application.

“…High conductivity affects the action of chemical additives, especially polymers, causing a loss of efficiency in mineral charge retention. Additionally, it reduces the tensile strength because it occupies the spaces where fiber-to-fiber contact used to occur, increasing the sensitivity to sheet breakage (Ahola, 2006;Lima, 2012). The industry under study has a clean circuit (below 10 mS), even with the use of RF.…”

“…The indicator compares the new case to the examples in the case base and uses the information of the best fitting case to calculate the predicted break sensitivity. As output the system gives numerical value for the predicted amount of breaks [24,25]. Figure 1 shows the principal structure of the case base, and The structure of RETRIEVE and REUSE stages [25].…”
