Case-control comparison of “in-the-groove” and lateral-row arthroscopic biceps tenodesis with concomitant rotator cuff repair

Abstract: Background: Lateral-row (LR) arthroscopic biceps tenodesis (BT) has been described as a technique using an LR rotator cuff repair (RCR) anchor for biceps fixation. This technique has not been compared with other BT techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing a suprapectoral "in-the-groove" arthroscopic BT and patients treated with an LR tenodesis performed in conjunction with arthroscopic RCR. Methods: Patients undergoing arthroscopic BT in the setting of a… Show more

“…DeVito et al 6 performed a retrospective case-control study comparing biceps tenodesis techniques in patients with concomitant rotator cuff repairs. Techniques involved anchor fixation in the bicipital groove versus inclusion of the tenodesis in the most anterior anchor of the lateral row of the rotator cuff repair.…”

“…Some techniques also require an additional surgical approach. A technique that combines biceps tenodesis with arthroscopic rotator cuff repair has been described 2 , 6 , 7 , 14 , 15 , 17 with clinical outcomes being reported by Checchia et al 2 and DeVito et al 6 Of these, most techniques use the anterolateral anchor of a double-row repair, with the exception of Checchia et al and George. 7 …”

“…Other authors report similar open tenodesis failure rates resulting in muscle belly deformity, 0.57% 33 and 3.4%. 20 As mentioned previously, arthroscopic biceps tenodesis can have wide variability in technique, 7,11,12,18,27,30,39,40 making the interpretation and extrapolation of findings amongst multiple studies difficult. We advocate for the ALL technique because it can be performed with fewer incisions than a subpectoral technique while also still being able to use a biomechanically superior locked loop or Krakow stitch.…”

“…The 2 main treatment options are commonly used in practice can be divided into tenotomy and tenodesis. Furthermore, there are numerous different surgical techniques used to perform a biceps tenodesis, 7 , 11 , 12 , 18 , 27 , 30 , 39 , 40 making it even more difficult to interpret the outcomes of this procedure. This study focuses solely on the technique and early outcomes associated with the ALL suprapectoral biceps tenodesis method to treat LHBT pathology.…”
