Case Report: Disseminated Edwardsiella tarda infection in an immunocompromised patient

Lucia An,
June L. Chan,
Margaret Nguyen
et al.

Abstract: Human infection caused by bacteria of the Edwardsiella genus is rare and most often presents with gastroenteritis that rarely requires antibiotics. Our case report describes a medically complex patient with chronic steroid use contributing to an immunocompromised state, who presented with fever and abdominal pain. The patient was later found to have Edwardsiella tarda (E. tarda) bacteremia and underwent paracentesis confirming E. tarda bacterial peritonitis requiring a prolonged antibiotic course. This case re… Show more

“…Clinical isolates of E. tarda are uniformly susceptible to aminoglycosides, ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, βlactam antibiotics (cephalosporins), β-lactamase-inhibitor agents, carbapenems, quinolones, aztreonam, and chloramphenicol. Such in vitro studies are supported by recent case studies [155,168,169] and one retrospective survey of E. tarda bacteremia in Japan [149] yielding identical results. The term "pan-susceptible" has been coined in referring to this unusual highly susceptible Edwardsiella species [155].…”

The term "pan-susceptible" has been coined in referring to this unusual highly susceptible Edwardsiella species [155]. While the vast majority (>90%) of E. tarda strains have also been found to be susceptible to both tetracycline class compounds and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, rare resistant isolates have been detected in vitro or in vivo [197,198].…”
