Case report: Good prognosis in leiomyosarcoma of the kidney

Abstract: Sarcomas represent 1-2% of all malignant renal tumors in adults, with an incidence that increases with advancing age. Renal sarcoma is less common, but more lethal than sarcoma of any other genitourinary site. The common signs and symptoms associated with renal sarcoma in adults include palpable mass, abdominal or flank pain and hematuria similar to those seen with large, rapidly growing renal cell carcinomas. Usually, radical nephrectomy remains the treatment of choice for these tumors, which exhibits an aggr… Show more

“…One additional challenge in making the correct diagnosis is that conventional imaging is limited as the tumor characteristics seen on imaging may not be sufficient to reliably differentiate leiomyosarcoma from RCC [4]. Therefore, it is not surprising that renal leiomyosarcoma is often mistaken for RCC prior to surgery and subsequent tissue analysis [5, 6]. …”

“…The role of adjuvant chemotherapy/ radiotherapy remains obscure due to paucity of data on treatment of this rare renal neoplasm [9]. Mean survival rate of renal leiomyosarcomas is quite less ranging from 6 months to 2 years after diagnosis [1,10].…”

“…Malignant smooth muscle tumours of the kidney are uncommon and share only 1-2% of the total adult renal neoplasms [1]. Of these renal leiomyosarcoma is the most common variant and constitute 50-60% of the total renal sarcomas [2], however reported literature is very scarce.…”

“…Generally, the most important prognostic feature in the sarcomas is presence of tumor on the surgical margin and grade of the tumor. Radical nephrectomy is the primary therapeutic method for the renal leiomyosarcoma [4].…”
