Case Report: Successful Reperfusion of Pulmonary Thromboembolism Using tPA in a Cat

Abstract: Pulmonary thromboembolism is a potentially life threatening condition that is uncommonly recognized in cats. Thrombolytic agents have been described as a treatment for this condition in human and canine patients, particularly in cases where hemodynamic instability is persistent despite supportive care. This report describes the clinical course, echocardiographic diagnosis, and successful thrombolysis of a cat with pulmonary thromboembolism. Despite confirmed reperfusion, the cat succumbed to thromboembolic dis… Show more

“…Several case reports have documented PH in cats with PTE, although some of these include patients with more than one disease process, which could have resulted in PH. 13,67,8385 In the case reported by Baron Toaldo et al, 13 the cat received a single dose of carboplatin prior to developing PTE and PH; in this case, it is not known if the PH developed as a result of the chemotherapeutic agent or the PTE. In the case reported by Valente et al, 67 the cat presented with interstitial pneumonia, as well as coarctation of the pulmonary artery, with severe thrombosis and mid-intimal hypertrophy.…”

“…Feline aortic thromboembolism is a cardiovascular disease that mainly affects the feline species, being a painful episode characterized by acute ischemic necrosis of one or both pelvic limbs, which can cause the patient's death (GIL-ORTUÑO et al, 2020). Among the most common causes that generate this type of episode are cardiomyopathies (PETRUSHKO; GRUSHANSKA, 2023), hyperthyroidism (SUTTON; LONG MAYS; MCLAUGHLIN, 2022), nephropathy (GARDINER, 2020) and neoplasms (GUARINO et al, 2021).…”
