Case Series Analysis of Myopic Progression Control With a Unique Extended Depth of Focus Multifocal Contact Lens

Abstract: This unique extended depth of focus (center distance) daily disposable multifocal contact lens was effective in slowing myopic progression in these children. These findings add to the growing evidence that center distance multifocal soft contact lenses may slow the progression of myopia.

“…The total diameter of the lens is 14.5 mm and base curve is 8.3 mm. The lens is supposed to have approximately +8 D to +11 D of additional power at the edge of the pupil (pupil size range information not available) and approximately +20 D of additional power at the edge of the optic zone (US patents 6474814, 7178918) . The high values indicate that these are tangential (radial) rather than sagittal (circumferential) additional powers.…”

“…Treatments include orthokeratology, spectacle lenses and contact lenses . In the case of the latter two, treatment can be either with lenses whose original purpose was to correct presbyopia or lenses specifically designed to control myopia progression . Contact lenses can have discrete zones of different powers or may have aspheric surfaces to produce power variation; all can be referred to using the term ‘multifocal’.…”

“…A common clinical question often arises for the recommendation of either orthokeratology, multifocal soft contact lenses (Visioneering Technologies, Inc, Natural Vue 1 Day Multifocal Contact Lenses, Alpharetta, GA), 95 or a low dosage of atropine. From a research literature standpoint they are equivalent.…”

“…With increasing age, the patient will likely have more interest in orthokeratology lenses or soft multifocal lenses, such as Natural Vue 1 day Multifocal lenses. 95 Depending on his myopic progression, atropine may or may not be recommended with contact lens wear. Case 4 A 9 year old female is currently wearing -2.50 OU; and using atropine 0.01% nightly OU.…”
