Case Study: Glass‐Infiltrated Alumina

Abstract: In this chapter, the tribological properties of glass -infi ltrated alumina are discussed with a major aim of scientifi cally understanding the infl uence of glass infi ltration on the underlying mechanisms of material removal (when fretted against steel). The formation of tribochemical reaction products is explained using the thermodynamically feasible reactions. The major wear mechanisms are identifi ed as fatigue wear, three -body abrasion, and formation of a tribochemical layer.
