“…A multiple case study design was chosen as it allows for a deeper analysis within each case and across cases (Stake, 1995; Yin, 2014). We compare two case studies of institutions with contrasting levels of public engagement supply: recent research indicates Portugal preforms much better than Austria in multiple dimensions of (digital) public engagement, namely, by scoring higher on information supply to citizens, the provision of communication, and interactive multimedia and consultation and participation opportunities (Serra‐Silva, 2020).…”

“…One of the criteria used for the selection of participants should be the criterion of convenience, pointed out by Flick (2007), which allows selecting cases that are more easily accessible according to the existing conditions, since it is anticipated that the research will have limited resources of time and people. In addition, the participating cases should be selected if they meet the criteria posed by Stake (1998) in the sense that:…”

“…This case study is part of a larger project conducted at a research‐intensive US university to gain a better understanding of multilingual practices and perspectives of Asian international students by taking a longitudinal view of their academic literacy development. In general, case study research refers to “the study of the particularity and complexity of a single case” (Stake, 1995, p. xi) in order to grasp “a contemporary phenomenon in depth and within its real‐life context, especially when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly evident” (Yin, 2009, p. 18). From this base, Riko, who identified herself as a multilingual having linguistic and cultural knowledge of three languages—Japanese as her first language (L1), Korean as her heritage and second language (HL/L2), and English as her third language (L3) 1 —during our first meeting, was purposefully selected to correspond to our primary research interest.…”
