Cashew reject meal in diets of laying chickens: nutritional and economic suitability

Abstract: The present study investigated the nutritional and economic suitability of cashew reject meal (full fat and defatted) as replacement for groundnut cake (GNC) in the diets of laying chickens. A total of eighty four brown shavers at 25 weeks of age were randomly allotted into seven dietary treatments each containing 6 replicates of 2 birds each. The seven diets prepared included diet 1, a control with GNC at 220gkg−1 as main protein source in the diet. Diets 2, 3 and 4 consist of gradual replacement of GNC with … Show more

“…The proper identification and detoxification of anti‐nutritional factors can enable the use of new plant ingredients in feed formulations. There are plenty of investigations carried out on cashew nut and its industrial by‐products in animal nutrition (Akande, Akinwumi, & Abegundi, ; Donkoh, Attoh‐Kotoku, Kwame, & Gascar, ). India is a major producer, processor, consumer and exporter of cashew in the world.…”

“…In view of this, research efforts have been geared towards the search for available alternatives (Arowora and Tewe, 2003) including discarded cashew nut meal (Akande et al, 2015), Jatropha curcas seed and kernel meal (Oladunjoye et al, 2014;Ojediran et al, 2014), cassava peels, brewer's dried grain, rice husk, pineapple waste, palm kernel meal, sorghum spent grains, among others (Shittu et al, 2016). However, the attendant anti-nutritional factors, cost of processing and seasonal availability (Ojediran et al, 2017) of some of these alternatives have prompted the possibilities of using industrial wastes devoid of anti-nutrients such as biscuit dough.…”

“…Cashewnut (Anacardium occidentale) is an important crop with high export value and also a good plant protein and vitamin source (Akande et al, 2015). Cashew crop is indigenous to Brazil and was introduced to East and West Africa, India and Portuguese in the early 16 th century (Frankel, 1991).…”
