Cassava response to the integrated use of manure and NPK fertilizer in Zambia

Abstract: Cassava is Africa's second most important food source in terms of calories consumed per capita. However, farmers use little or no fertilizer on cassava and scant information is available regarding the cassava yield response to mineral and organic fertilizer inputs in Zambia. This study was undertaken to determine the response of cassava to the integrated use of organic and inorganic nutrient sources in two contrasting agroecological zones of Zambia; Mansa located in Zone III and Kabangwe located in Zone II. Th… Show more

“…A leaf in the shade of another receives about 1/10 th of the light of one in full sun (Zhu et al ., ). Leaf area indices of cassava crops in Sub‐Saharan Africa may average little more than 2 (Biratu et al ., ), so does shading matter? Zhu et al .…”

“…Amujoyegbe et al (2007) reported that poultry dropping increased root growth of maize and the crop extracted soil water more efficiently for increased grain yield. Poultry manure was identified to be the most concentrated in nutrient content among all the organic sources (Biratu et al, 2018). Ogbonna et al (2012) noted that poultry dropping plays significant roles in enhancing the yield of crops in the southern part of Nigeria.…”

“…Cassava could be cultivated under such infertile soils giving an acceptable production like the soil low availability of nutrients (Imakumbili et al 2019;Njankouo Ndam et al 2019). Therefore, under sandy soils the supply of enough and proper nutrients for cultivated cassava is a vital issue to get the optimal cassava growth, which needs the adequate supply of soil nutrients (Munyahali et al 2017;Biratu et al 2018). These results might be correlated with the gene action of the tested cultivars and the morphological characteristic as well as the chemical content of these cultivars (Njankouo Ndam et al 2019).…”
