Casting methods for the production of rotationally symmetric copper bimetals

Abstract: Multiple-material products are characterised by a complex property profile which is achieved by combining the particular advantages of at least two different materials. Bimetal casting is an energy- and material-efficient technology for the production of multi-metallic objects. This paper describes the development of a semi-continuous casting process for the formation of a rotationally symmetric bimetal with a cohesive bonding character at the interface of a copper–tin alloy (CuSn6) and pure copper (Cu99.5). “…While study of the interface bonding has been the major area of research since both metals need to be joined to behave like a single metal. Analysis of images from SEM was one of the most common testing carried out on bimetal studies [5], [7], [13], [24] [17]. There are various process parameters that were used by different researchers in order to observe the variations in the microstructure and bonding of the bimetals at the interface.…”

“…By using different time intervals, a bimetallic material was successfully fabricated using a 10 s time interval. Extensive experiments on the thermal process window for Cu-Sn alloy/Cu by static liquid-liquid bimetal casting was conducted in [26]. It was reported in [26] that a cohesive bond between Cu-Sn alloy and pure Cu partners was achieved by forming a solid interface solution.…”

Previous studies [27] have shown that liquid-liquid bimetal casting of carbon steel/chromium cast-iron bimetal can be used to fabricate a distinguishable composite interlayer.…”
