CAT C-262T and GPX1 Pro198Leu polymorphisms in a Turkish population

Abstract: Oxidative stress is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of considerable number of complex diseases. The antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) are important components of cell defense against oxidative stress, and polymorphisms in the genes which regulate their expression may contribute to differences in susceptibility of individuals to oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study was to assess the distribution of CAT C-262T and GPX1 … Show more

“…The CAT -262C/T, GPX1 Pro198Leu and SOD1 +35A/C polymorphisms were associated with an increased risk of glaucoma. These findings support the hypothesis that genetic variations in antioxidant defense may modify the risk of glaucoma among individuals with elevated oxidative stress or decreased antioxidant capacity [33,34,35,36]. The present study examines the effect of serum SOD1, GPX and CAT1 level on the eye.…”

“…They are widely distributed within the coding and noncoding regions of the GPx1 gene as reported in OMIM database (ID: 138320) and dbSNP records (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/SNP/snp_ref.cgi?locusId=2876). A variant most known within the coding region is Pro198Leu polymorphism (Suzen et al, 2010). The rs 1800668 (C/T) variant, investigated in the study, is also located within the GPx1gene promoter.…”

“…Human glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is an antioxidant enzyme that is expressed in blood vessels (Suzen et al, 2010). Its role is protection of cells against oxidative damage by reducing hydrogen peroxide and a wide range of organic peroxidases to H 2 O 2 with reduced glutathione.…”
