Catalogue of the type specimens deposited in the Mollusca Collection of the Museu Nacional / UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: A curatorial revision of the type specimens deposited in the Mollusca Collection of the Museu Nacional / UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (MNRJ) revealed the existence of 518 lots of type specimens (holotypes, neotypes, syntypes and paratypes) for 285 names of molluscan taxa from 88 families, including 247 gastropods, 30 bivalves, three cephalopods and five scaphopods. A total of 106 holotypes and one neotype are deposited in the MNRJ. Type material for ten nominal taxa described as being deposited in the MNRJ was… Show more

“…Remarks: The original publication designated 22 paratypes for this species, although information about collection acronym and catalog number is given for only 18 of them. The original publication indicates that paratype 15 is deposited in IBUFRJ 5522, however, MNRJ 7160, not cited in the original publication, is also labeled as "paratype 15" (Pimenta et al 2014). This explains the location of some of the four paratypes not explicitly mentioned in the original list.…”

“…The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) held two malacological collections, one at the Museu Nacional/UFRJ (see Pimenta et al (2014) for details on type specimens, and Pimenta (2016) for a historical account) and another at the Biological Institute/UFRJ. The latter presents a large account of Brazilian deep-sea mollusks, with about 21,000 lots.…”

“…Moreover, it can be distinguished from nearly every other congener in Brazilian waters by its size alone, being at least 25% larger than the remaining species. The sole exception is Arene flexispina Leal & Coelho, 1985, recently illustrated by Pimenta et al (2014). It can be distinguished from the latter by having a predominantly red shell with a yellow apex, as opposed to an overall reddish-brown shell with lighter colored spiral cords and spines; more numerous nodules/spines; by being proportionally shorter and wider, and by having a less convex and more coarsely sculptured base.…”

“…Currently (July, 2016), there are 671 type lots for 347 names, including 132 holotypes and one neotype. A revision of the type material of species described until 2013 was published by Pimenta et al (2014).…”
