Total hydrogenation of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), both of which are important platform chemicals from biomass, produces tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHTHF), respectively, and these products can be used as solvent or raw material of resin. Ni catalysts can give good yields in these reactions; however the low activity and stability are problems. Supported monometallic Pd and Ru catalysts have been reported to be also active in hydrogenation, although the selectivity for total hydrogenation tends to be lower. Other monometallic catalysts such as Cu and Pt generally have low activity in furan ring hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan intermediates. We explored various multicomponent catalysts and found that Ni _ Pd/SiO2, Pd _ Ir/SiO2 and Rh _ Ir _ ReOx/SiO2 give good yield of THFA or BHTHF with much higher activity than the mixture of each component supported on SiO2.

“…The Pt 4f signal can be deconvoluted into two pairs of doublets and the XP lines arising from the Al 2p core level at 73.6-74.3 eV overlapped with those of the Pt. The most intensive doublet with binding energies of 70.8 (Pt 4f7/2) and 74.25 eV (Pt 4f5/2) is attributed to metallic Pt (0) [30]. The peaks located at 72.12 and 75.57 eV are assigned to Pt4f7/2 and Pt4f5/2, respectively, which is characteristic of the Pt (2+) ions of PtO in the achieved catalyst [31].…”

Abstract:Bismuth plays important roles in promoting the oxidation of alcohols towards high-valueadded chemicals over a noble metal loading catalyst. Herein, Mg-Al hydrotalcite-supported platinum-bismuth nanoparticles (Pt-Bi/HT) were prepared by the co-impregnation method and used in the selective oxidation of glycerol towards dihydroxyacetone (DHA). The incorporation of Bi species into Pt/HT significantly enhances the conversion of glycerol and the selectivity of DHA. The high selectivity of DHA with 80.6% could be achieved at 25.1% conversion of glycerol. The Bi species of the Pt-Bi/HT catalyst mainly exist in the form of BiOCl and Bi metal, which is different from the previous Pt-Bi based catalyst, confirmed by a combination of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). A plausible mechanism is proposed to elucidate the promoting role of Bi species on the Pt/HT catalyst in the selective oxidation of glycerol towards DHA.

The use of renewable sources for obtainment of chemicals, biofuels, materials and energy has become each time larger due to environmental, political and economical problems of non-renewable energies utilization. Among several products that can be obtained from lignocellulosic biomass, which is a renewable source, there is furfural, a chemical from which many other value added chemical products can be obtained. The main route for furfural production consists of an acid hydrolysis of hemicelluloses present in lignocellulosic biomass to obtain xylose, which goes through a dehydration reaction to produce furfural. Due to the presence of an aldehyde group and a conjugated system of double bounds, furfural can go through several reactions, allowing the production of a range of value added products. In this sense, this article performs a review about mechanisms of furfural production from lignocellulosic biomass, highlighting its chemical properties which enable its utilization in different industrial applications of economic interest.
