Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation of Aqueous Solutions of Substituted Phenols

Abstract: Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of aqueous solutions of phenol, 2-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol were studied using Cu/ CeO 2 with 4% of copper as catalytic material. The catalyst was prepared by an impregnation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area, oxygen storage capacity (OSC), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and XPS. The reaction was carried out in a batch reactor at T=160°C and 1.0 MPa. Cu/CeO 2 catalyst was found effective i… Show more

“…When this was done, little 4-NP was adsorbed to the catalyst. As shown in Fig 6A, complete reduction of 4-NP occurred in 160 s, which is faster than previously reported rates (Zeng et al, 2013;Chu et al, 2011;Posada et al, 2006;Liu et al, 2013;Yao et al, 2015). We did experiment to investigate the adsorption effect in the absence of Cu/ Cu 2 O/CuO@C, the result showed that UV-vis adsorption spectra of 4-NP didn't change during 10 h with the addition of NaBH4 (Fig.…”

“…Posada et al [26] have shown catalytic wet air oxidation of aqueous solutions of phenol, 2-chlorophenol (2CP) and 4-nitrophenol (4NF) by using Cu/CeO 2 as the catalyst. These workers achieved complete degradation of phenol and 2-chlorophenol respectively in 100 and 130 min, and about 60% destruction with 4-nitrophenol in 200 min.…”

“…The performance of 4 wt% Cu/CeO 2 catalyst for the CWAO of phenol, o-chlorophenol, and p-nitrophenol was investigated by Posada et al [79]. Under 160 • C and 1 MPa, complete conversion of phenol and o-cholophenol were achieved after 100 min and 130 min, respectively, but only about 60% of p-nitrophenol was degraded after 200 min.…”
