AbstractIn the past few years, there have been many researches on the use of different types of homogenous catalyst for the degradation of textile wastewater in conventional advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, homogenous AOPs suffer from few limitations, including large consumption of chemicals, acidic pH, high cost of hydrogen peroxide, generation of iron sludge, and necessity of post-treatment. Therefore, recently, there have been more researches that focus on improving the performance of conventional AOPs using heterogeneous catalysts such as titanium dioxide, nanomaterials, metal oxides, zeolite, hematite, goethite, magnetite, and activated carbon (AC). Besides, different supports such as AC that have been incorporated with transition metals and clays have been proven to have excellent catalytic activity in AOPs. This paper presents a comprehensive review of advances and prospects of catalytic AOPs for the decontamination of a wide range of synthetic and real textile wastewater. This review provides an up-to-date critical review of the information on the degradation of various textile dyes by a wide range of heterogeneous catalysts and adsorbents. The future challenges of AOPs, including chemical consumption, toxicity assessment, reactor design, and limitation of catalysts, are discussed in this paper. In addition, this paper also discusses the presence of ions, generation of by-products, and industrial applications of AOPs. Special emphasis is given to recent studies and large-scale combination of AOPs for wastewater treatment. This review paper concludes that more studies are needed for the kinetics, reactor design, and modeling of hybrid AOPs and the production of their corresponding intermediate products and secondary pollutants. A better economic model should also be developed to predict the cost of AOPs, as the treatment cost varies with dyes and textile effluents.

Se investiga la oxidación de fenol sobre catalizador de arcilla pilarizada en un reactor operando tanto en batch como en semibatch. Los experimentos fueron llevados a cabo a temperatura ambiente y presión atmosférica, con concentración de fenol de 100 mg/L, concentración de catalizador de 0,5 y 2,75 g/L y concentración de peróxido de hidrógeno del 50 y el 100 % de la cantidad estequiométrica necesaria para la total degradación de fenol. Se comparan ambos procesos en términos de degradación de fenol, degradación de H2O2, formación y degradación de intermediarios aromáticos y ácidos de cadena corta. Se determinó, que la velocidad de degradación de fenol e intermediarios aromáticos es más lenta en el proceso en semibatch. Sin embargo, hay un uso más eficiente del peróxido de hidrógeno en el proceso semibatch, favoreciendo la reacción con las especies orgánicas y reduciendo las reacciones competitivas.

Some study attributed it to the adsorption of phenol and corresponding to the formation of phenoxy radicals on catalytic surface (Carriazo et al, 2003;Kurian and Sugunan, 2006); some considered it as the result of the dissolution of a portion of ferric ions (Belaroui and Bengueddach, 2012;Catrinescu et al, 2012); while Luo et al (2009) put it down to the protonation of surface iron species since a lower pH shortened the induction period. Al-Fe-, Al-Cu-, and Al-Fe-Cu-PILCs were synthesized, characterized and tested in the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). An apparent induction period followed by a rapid oxidation was observed during the Fenton-like reaction, and the whole reaction could be modeled well using a Fermi's kinetic equation (R 2 = 0.9938~0.9993). The generation of hydroxyl radicals (HO • ) from surface-catalyzed decomposition of H 2 O 2 was the oxidation cause whereas the dissolution of active metals was its result. Accordingly, induction period was the cause of heterogeneous surface activation (catalysis or modification) for more HO • formed by decreasing pH. 4-CP oxidation proceeded via 4-chlorocatechol (major) and hydroquinone (minor) pathways, along the formation of main intermediate (5-chloro-1,2,4-benzentriol). Finally besides CO 2 , H 2 O and Cl − two main compounds (I and II) formed, where the former was identified as 2,4-dioxopentanedioic acid whereas the latter as ferric-oxalate complex. There were marked structural and active differences between Al-Fe-PILC and Al-Cu-PILC in which compared to the latter, the former possessed higher SSA and activity but its optimal calcination temperature was lower and the induction time was also longer. In addition, compound II accounted for a considerable proportion in Al-Fe-PILC system whereas compound I was almost only component in Al-Cu-PILC system.
