Catanionic surfactant formation from the interaction of the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate (bmim-octyl SO4) in aqueous solution

Abstract: The interaction between the cationic surfactant Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate (bmim-octylSO 4 ) in aqueous solution has been investigated at two total concentrations (0.5 and 10 mM) and different CTAB mole fractions ( CTAB ).Samples of different physical appearance were obtained depending on  CTAB suggesting different kind of aggregates. Bluish solutions ( CTAB from 0.1 to 0.6) were assigned to vesicles of the catanionic surfactant f… Show more

“…Considering the CMC of CTAB is about 0.90 mM, 9,27 the concentrations values of CTAB that lie on both sides of the CMC of CTAB were selected to investigate the effect of adding CTAB monomer or micelles to IL aqueous solution on the CMC values and surface activities of mixed systems. The representative plots of the conductance of the mixed system (C 12 mimBr/CTAB system) versus IL concentration on addition of different concentrations of CTAB in aqueous medium are shown in Fig.…”

“…For instance, phase behaviour of aqueous two-phase systems containing an ionic liquid, 5 molecular interactions and preparation of nanoparticles, 6,7 and effects on properties of nanocomposites. 8 In these studies, the binary mixture is relatively fascinating from an academic point of view wherein including common ionicionic systems, [9][10][11] and ionic-nonionic systems. [12][13][14] The CTAB/ bmim-octylSO 4 binary system in aqueous solution at two total concentrations and different CTAB mole fractions was investigated and found to form the CTA-octylSO 4 catanionic complex, 9 which is considered analogue to the effect of the addition of inorganic salts in such similar systems.…”

“…The figure shows that the proportion of SSS and CH has a great influence on the morphology of mixed solutions. The samples with X 1 <0.4 show a blue or light blue color, inferring the formation of catanionic vesicles in mixed solutions (Thapa et al, 2013;Comelles et al, 2015). In addition, it was discovered that there was turbidity and even precipitate formation, in mixed solutions with X 1 !0.4.…”

“…The interaction between IL and surfactants are controlled by intramolecular interactions (Chauhan & Sharma, ; Pal & Chaudhury, ). Recently, the aggregation behavior of gemini surfactants, with their remarkably low critical micelle concentration (CMC) values, unique aggregation morphology, antimicrobial activity, and better wetting ability, has been investigated in IL media (Comelles, Ribosa, Gonzalez, & Garcia, ; Li et al, ). Gemini surfactants offer several advantages, which make them fascinating candidates for use in pharmaceutical formulations.…”
