“…Draping the surgical field was the most poorly performed step in the current study, with a mean score of only slightly >3. According to the published criteria of the OSCAR system for MSICS, a score of three for surgical draping indicates: ‘Drapes with minimal verbal instruction, incomplete lash coverage’ . Previous studies have showed that the patient's ocular adnexal flora are the most common infectious agents in postoperative endophthalmitis .…”

“…Videos were graded as previously described (Wang LH, et al, unpublished observations, 2015) by two independent expert trainers for each of 12 specific steps of surgery and 7 global assessments using a slightly-modified version of the Ophthalmology Surgical Competency Assessment Rubric: Small Incision Cataract Surgery (OSCAR: SICS) developed by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO). 16 Grades for each step ranged from 2 (poor performance) to 5 (good performance), with a score of 0 if the step was performed by trainers. The subscore ranged from 0 to 35 for the global portion, 0 to 60 for the task-specific portion, and 0 to 95 points for the total score.…”

“…Furthermore, it was subsequently shown to have inter-rater reliability 12. In a similar fashion internationally applicable assessment tools for extracapsular cataract surgery (ICO-OSCAR: ECCE),11 small incision cataract surgery (ICO-OSCAR: SICS),13 lateral tarsal strip surgery (ICO-OSCAR: LTS),14 and strabismus surgery (ICO-OSCAR: Strabismus)15 were developed. Additional ICO-OSCARS are being developed for panretinal photocoagulation, corneal transplant, vitrectomy, trabeculectomy and epiretinal membrane peeling.…”
