Catatonia After Liver Transplantation

Abstract: BackgroundCentral nervous system complications after transplantation occur in up to 40% of recipients and these complications are associated with increased length of hospital stay and mortality. Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric clinical syndrome which has been described in case reports and in a small case series as occurring in the immediate post-solid organ transplantation (SOT) period, and it has been attributed to calcineurin inhibitor neurotoxicity, psychological vulnerability, and depression. Among transpl… Show more

“…Metabolic, infectious, endocrine, nutritional and neoplastic disorders: Some metabolic derangements can cause catatonia in older people. These include acute renal failure[ 15 , 52 , 87 ], heart failure[ 8 , 15 ], liver failure[ 15 ], post liver transplantation[ 88 ], dehydration[ 15 ], hypernatremia[ 87 , 89 ] and hyponatremia[ 90 - 93 ]. Infectious disorders associated with catatonia are acute[ 94 - 96 ] and chronic recurrent urinary tract infection[ 97 ]; pneumonia[ 8 , 15 , 98 ] and coronavirus disease 2019[ 99 - 101 ].…”

“…Reports of organ involvement with malignant catatonia include acute renal failure, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and hepatocellular damage [ 2 ]. To our knowledge, there have been cases of catatonia after liver transplantation and upon initial diagnosis of Wilson’s disease, but there have been no presentations of catatonia as the cause of ALF [ 3 , 4 ]. As NMS was also on our initial differential, we did find a few NMS and ALF case reports [ 5 ].…”
