Catecholaminergic innervation of the septum in the frog: A combined immunohistochemical and tract‐tracing study

Abstract: In the present study, we have investigated the distribution and the origin of the catecholaminergic innervation of the septal region in the frog Rana perezi. Immunohistochemistry for dopamine and two enzymes required for the synthesis of catecholamines, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) revealed a complex pattern of catecholaminergic (CA) innervation in the anuran septum. Dopaminergic fibers were primarily present in the dorsal portion of the lateral septum, whereas noradrenergic (D… Show more

“…They were restricted to tegmental nuclei and the caudal extent of the posterior tubercle (discussed below) in the mesencephalon and the laterodorsal tegmental and raphe nuclei in the rostral rhombencephalon. The laterodorsal tegmental nucleus has been demonstrated to be an important cholinergic and nitrergic center in anurans and, therefore, may provide this type of input to the MeA Marín et al, 1997d;López and Gonzá lez, 2002), as it most likely does to other limbic structures such as the medial pallium and the septum (Sá nchez-Camacho et al, 2003). Of note, anterograde tracer injections that involved the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus in R. perezi clearly labeled fibers and terminals in the MeA (Marín et al, 1997a).…”

“…This region almost totally lacks CBir or CRir cells or fibers, as was also observed in the lateral septal region of urodeles [Morona and González, 2008]. Differently, abundant septal CRir and CBir cell populations in anurans distribute differently within distinct nuclei [Sánchez-Camacho et al, 2003Endepols et al, 2006]. Interestingly, the caudally located and shrunken septal region of Dermophis would correspond with the medial septal nucleus which contains, in addition to the CRir cell population demonstrated in the present study, GnRH immunoreactive cells and cholinergic and nitrergic neurons, as in anurans and urodeles [Marín et al, 1997;Rastogi et al, 1998;González et al, 2002a, b].…”

“…The amphibian LS is located medial to the lateral ventricles and has been identified by neurochemical means where cholinergic neurons are abundant in this region and sparse in other regions of the telencephalon (Marin et al, 1997b;Sánchez-Camacho et al, 2003). Furthermore, there are TH-immunoreactive fiber nests in this region , a feature that is conserved across vertebrates.…”
