Cathode development for alkaline fuel cells based on a porous silver membrane

Abstract: Abstract:Porous silver membranes were investigated as potential substrates for alkaline fuel cell cathodes by the means of polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The silver membranes provide both electrocatalytic function, mechanical support and a means of current collection. Improved performance, compare to a previous design, was obtained by increasing gas accessibility (using Teflon AF instead of PTFE suspension) and by adding a catalyst improvement compare to the previo… Show more

“…Impedance measurement and a polarization curve were used to examine the to be applied for a mobile application. The power density was further improved from 15 mW.cm -2 to mW.cm -2 [123]. This improvement was due to the replacement of PTFE with Teflon AF and adding the catalyst manganese dioxide or platinum.…”

“…Since the cathode is important, development of the cathode is more aggressive than the anode. Bidault et al presented a sizeable number of studies on the cathode of the AFC [120][121][122][123]. The feasibility of using nickel foam as the cathode (and its performance) was compared to silver-coated nickel foam and nickel mesh [120].…”

“…The AF is a hydrophobic polymer which is a substitute to PTFE. The application of the AF in its dissolved form meant a thin and uniform film was left after evaporation of the solvent, 37 ideal for coating the 400 nm pores of the polycarbonate. This coating 100 method also eliminates the sintering step at > 300 °C, needed when applying the more typically used PTFE colloids, which would cause degradation of the PCTE membrane.…”
