Cathode Strip Chambers in ATLAS: Installation, Commissioning and in Situ Performance

Abstract: The Muon Spectrometer of the ATLAS detector at the LHC is designed to provide high quality stand-alone muon identification, momentum measurement and trigger capabilities with high pseudorapidity coverage. Precision tracking at the inner-most station in the high pseudorapidity regions, 2 0 2 7, is performed by 16 four-layered Cathode Strip Chambers on each endcap. These are multi-wire proportional chambers with segmented cathodes providing excellent spatial resolution and high counting rate capability. The seco… Show more

“…The MDTs provide a spatial resolution of 35 µm. In addition, the high occupancy region 2.0 < η < 2.7 is covered by Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC) [85], which are multi-wire proportional chambers, with the cathodes segmented into strips. The CSCs can achieve a spatial resolution of 60 µm in the r direction and 5 mm in the φ direction.…”

“…Both TGC and RPC provide very fast signals for muon hits, and can therefore be used in the ATLAS trigger system to select events containing muons. There are also Muon Drift Tubes [58], which are used over most of the η range, and Cathode Strip Chambers [59], which are used in the range 2 < |η| < 2.7. These provide track measurements with high spatial resolution.…”

“…To overcome the dependence of the position resolution on the incidence angle [18] several strategies could be followed. In case enough space is available, one could tilt the chambers in order to minimize the mean incidence angle [19]. Alternatively, the gas gap width could be decreased to the absolutely operational minimum, albeit with possible effect on the reconstruction efficiency.…”
