Cathodic Protection of Pipeline Using Distributed Control System

Abstract: Distributed control system (DCS) is available in most of the compressor stations of cross-country pipeline systems. Programmable logic controller (PLC) is used in all the intermediate pigging (IP) stations/sectional valve (SV) stations to collect the field data and to control the remote actuated valves. This paper presents how DCS or PLC can be used for cathodic protection of gas pipelines. Virtual instrumentation (VI) software is used here for simulation and real-time implementation purpose. Analog input chan… Show more

“…For instance, rate of metal corrosion can be slowed down by direct and electrochemical applications of surface coatings (Ohtsuka, 2012;Nassif and Ghayad, 2013), use of corrosion inhibitors (Antonijevic and Petrovic, 2008;Dar, 2011;Kesavan et al, 2012), and cathodic protection (Jayapalan et al, 2014). Among the various methods available for corrosion control and protection, the use of corrosion inhibitors is the most popular because the approach is cheap and easy to operate (Dar, 2011;Singh et al, 2013).…”

“…The value of the coefficient of determination R 2 = 0.99 for this fitting function proves that the quality of fit is excellent. Equation (9) shows that the strong interference radius was positively correlated with the output current by a quadratic function.…”

“…[6][7][8] As an essential feature of ICCP, anode beds can be classified into two categories according to their burial method, namely, shallow and deep-well anode beds. [9] In comparison with the more commonly used shallow anode beds, deep-well anode beds have several significant advantages, including the occupation of less space, wider scope of protection, and a better protective effect. [10] As a result, deep-well anode beds have gradually become employed for corrosion protection on buried steel pipelines in urban areas.…”

“…Gummow et al [15] and Chen and He [16] designed cathodic protection systems, based on collecting pipeline protection potential data. Jayapalan et al [17] designed a cathodic protection system for pipelines, based on a distributed control system. Attarchi et al [18,19] simulated a linear anode-pipe cathodic protection system with fully nonlinear cathode boundary conditions and determined the linear anode and pipeline.…”
