Cationic polymerization of bis(1‐alkylvinyl)benzenes and related monomers, 3. Telechelics containing indane units

Abstract: The synthesis and characterization of linear telechelics containing l1I,3-trimethylindane units via cationic polymerization is described. 1,4-Diisopropenylbenzene (1) was polymerized in the presence of 1 -isopropenyl-4-methylbenzene (3 a) to give a polyindane with methyl end-groups, which was then oxidized to the corresponding carboxy-telechelic polymer. As an alternative route for the preparation of polymers with indane units in the main chain, the step growth polymerization of suitably substituted indane der… Show more

“…Polymerization of monomers that feature a pendent sandwich complex is an exploited synthetic approach to macromolecules with pendent sandwich complex. For instance, vinylferrocene was successfully polymerized to poly(vinylferrocene) under radical, [ 66,188,189 ] cationic, [ 190 ] anionic, [ 128,189,191 ] and Ziegler-Natta catalyst [ 190 ] polymerization conditions. Pittman et al reported an AIBNcatalyzed, free-radical polymerization of vinylferrocene ( 141 ) in benzene (Scheme 28 ).…”
