Cause‐specific mortality and cancer morbidity in 390 male workers exposed to high purity talc, a six‐decade follow‐up

Abstract: With the clear limitations of a small cohort, our results do hint at an effect of talc dust on mortality from NMRD other than pneumoconiosis, covered by a strong and persisting healthy worker effect. Also, an effect on CVD mortality, masked by a healthy worker selection into the cohort cannot be ruled out. Excess mortality from pneumoconiosis seen in other studies, may reflect exposure to quartz and, possibly, bias due to comparability problems.

“…The debate sparked by this paper led to several works focusing on this topic until last year with controversial results [ 35 , 37 , 184 , 215 , 216 , 217 , 218 , 219 , 220 , 221 , 222 , 223 , 224 ]. For example, it should be emphasized that no excesses of pleural mesothelioma nor talc pneumoconiosis were found in studies of miners in talc mines [ 177 , 225 , 226 , 227 , 228 ].…”

“…Talcs from both locations were considered to have low quartz content ( 36 ). A cohort study in Norway followed 390 talc miners and millers for mortality from 1952 to 2011 ( 38 , 39 ). Norwegian talc reportedly contains only trace amounts of quartz, tremolite and anthophyllite ( 38 ).…”

“…There have been several epidemiology studies of talcexposed miners, millers and others that were considered negative for mesothelioma detection including the studies in Table 1. 44 Wild et al 2002 France 47 Wild et al 2002 Austria 47 Pira et al 2017 Italy 48 Wergeland et al 2017 49 Copyright 2020 KEI Journals.
