Causes, management and complications of ascites: a review

Abstract: Ascites is the pathological state in which fluid accumulates in the peritoneal cavity. Fluid accumulation may be due to infection and malignancy or due to other diseases like liver disease, heart failure, and renal disease. The ascitic fluid can be graded into Transudative and Exudative fluid based on the serum ascites albumin gradient (SAAG). The prominent cause of ascites is found to be Liver Cirrhosis. The most common symptom of Ascites is recent weight gain, increased abdominal girth and dyspnea. The first… Show more

“…Ascites is the most common reason for hospital admission and leads to high healthcare costs . Therefore, the development of ascites should trigger the evaluation for liver transplantation since liver transplantation significantly improves patients’ survival at this stage of cirrhosis . Treatment of ascites alone has not resulted in significant improvements in survival; however, treating ascites is important because it improves the quality of life of cirrhotic patients and the occurrence of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is very unlikely in patients without ascites.…”

“…When the diagnosis has been made, the treatment is sometime not available or even inefficient due to the severity of the pathology. The etiologies are multiple and dominated by the hepatomegalies observed in 85% of the cases [5]. The others etiologies are related to heart diseases, to kidney pathologies or to the peritoneal tuberculosis [6] [7].…”
