Causes of Accidents Involving Scaffolding at Construction Sites

Abstract: Fatal accidents related to the use of scaffolds are one of the most common types of fatal accidents at construction sites in Malaysia, as reported by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the main causes of accidents involving scaffolding at construction sites, based on the perceptions of safety personnel. This study involved collecting data by distributing questionnaires to safety personnel working at construction sites in Johor. Data w… Show more

“…The alarming rate of scaffolding accidents led to a special committee (the Position Paper Committee) in 2013 by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, 2015). Yet, there have been more studies and reports on accidents relating to scaffolding on construction sites in Malaysia (Abas et al, 2020;Ayob et al, 2018;Williams et al, 2017;Ulang et al, 2014;Keng and Abdul Razak, 2014;Lee et al, 2018;CIDB, 2018). As much as the findings and recommendations for the studies are helpful, the studies tend not to go into the level of detail necessary to provide systemic explanations of the causes and remedial actions required for scaffolding accidents on construction sites.…”

“…Unfit for work has been recognized as a consequence of fatigue which can trigger unsafe behavior [ 51 ], lead to work error therefore leaving an impact on the safety and increase the likelihood of occupational accidents [ 19 ]. The scientific literatures have categorized causes of construction accidents into technical factors, environmental factors, human factors and organizational factors [ 52 ]. The technical errors arisen from deficiencies in the plant, equipment, tools or materials handling system such as insecure structure design.…”

“…The primary purpose of taking safety actions or management is to reduce the number of accidents. One of the leading causes of the accident is working at a height, e.g., scaffolding work at the construction site (Abas et al, 2020). Clevenger et al (2015) examined and evaluated the creation of a scaffold safety training module with interactive, BIM-enabled 3D representations to see if such a tool might improve scaffold safety training.…”
