Causes of changes in carotid intima-media thickness: a literature review

Abstract: Atherosclerosis causes significant morbidity and mortality. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) predicts future cardiovascular and ischaemic stroke incidence. CIMT, a measure of atherosclerotic disease, can be reliably determined in vivo by carotid ultrasound. In this review, we determined that CIMT is associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as age, sex, race, smoking, alcohol consumption, habitual endurance exercise, blood pressure, dyslipidemia, dietary patterns, risk-lowering drug the… Show more

“…A correlation between older age and higher cIMT/cEMT in the patient group is an expected result because age is a ‘traditional’ cardiovascular risk factor (Qu and Qu, ). The absence of a correlation between cIMT/cEMT and age in the control group seems remarkable.…”

“…This is an interesting result because peripheral insulin resistance was explained as an outcome of endothelial dysfunction in Behc ßet's disease (Erdem et al, 2006). A correlation between older age and higher cIMT/ cEMT in the patient group is an expected result because age is a 'traditional' cardiovascular risk factor (Qu and Qu, 2015). The absence of a correlation between cIMT/ cEMT and age in the control group seems remarkable.…”

“…For the last two decades various methods have been in use such are flow-mediated endothelium-dependent vasodilation (FMD), and intima-media thickness assessment (IMT), while venous plethysmography, and impulse wave analysis are less dependable. Magnetic resonance is mainly used for arterial compliance and large blood vessels analysis (25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31)(32)(33).…”
