Causes of Fatal Accidents Involving Coal Hauling Trucks at a Coal Mining Company in Indonesia

Abstract: Road hauling accidents involving hauling trucks are the highest contributor to coal mine accidents in Indonesia. More than 20 percent of accidents related to coal mining occur on hauling roads. PT X is an open-pit coal mining company that transports coal for processing using hauling trucks. At this company, coal hauling truck accidents also result in the highest number of fatal incidents. During the 2010-2015 period, 11 fatal accidents were reported, and hauling trucks were involved in 45 percent of the accide… Show more

“…The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States (CDC, 2015) estimates that one in three adults does not get enough sleep, labeling fatigue a public health problem. In an investigative study of hauling truck accidents from 2010-2014 in open-pits in Kalimantan, it was found that there were several contributing factors, namely lack of visibility, road conditions, operator behavior, operational conditions and weather conditions (Sudiyanto et al, 2018). Fatigue is a combination of several symptoms that can reduce work performance, such as lack of attention, slow response times, errors in decision making, poor performance in jobs that require skills and an increase in a person's chances of falling asleep (Energy Institute, 2014).…”
