Causes of Fatal Accidents Involving Cranes in the Australian Construction Industry

Abstract: In ten years from 2004 to 2013, 359 workers died in the Australian construction industry because of work related causes. This paper investigates crane-related fatalities in order to find the upstream causation of such accidents. The National Coroners’ Information System (NCIS) database was searched to identify fatal accidents in the construction industry involving the use of a crane.  The narrative description of the cases provided in the coroners’ findings and associated documents were content analysed to ide… Show more

“…More trustworthy equipment and environments are also worth attention [ 46 , [122] , [123] , [124] ]. According to our investigation, lift equipment often operates under corrosive gas dust containing acid and alkali, long-term operation of the collision, and anti-rust paint aging and shedding, so the surface loses protection, resulting in local corrosion and oxidation, thereby reducing the strength of the structure [ [125] , [126] , [127] ].…”

“…For accident type, the earthwork collapse is greatly related to the causal factor of construction site environment. The unreasonable layout of the construction site was found to have a great impact on fatal accidents involving cranes (Gharaie et al. , 2015).…”

“…While cranes have shown improvement along with technology over the years, crane accidents on construction sites still occur and result in injury or death. Crane accidents deaths can arise from a number of factors including; human behavior, inducting lightning, high winds, poor safety management, defective cranes, falls, electrocution and other hazards associated with working environments resulting in unsafe work procedures at heights (Zaini et al 2020;Gharaie et al 2015).…”
