Cave Ecosystems: Microbiological View

Abstract: The mysterious passages known as caves between the earth and the underworld are important geological forms that can be investigated for several astonishing facts. The caves that we define as cavities or gaps into which a person can enter are usually visited by people for several different purposes. Caves are important for studies on environments in terms of biology and geology due to their extreme conditions. In Turkey, there are about 35.000-40.000 caves, most of which have not been mapped or scientifically e… Show more

“…As cavernas são consideradas ambientes extremos, por propiciarem formas de vida especializadas (Candiroglu, 2017). Embora suas peculiaridades sejam chamariz para novos estudos biotecnológicos, são ambientes pouco estudados do ponto de vista microbiológico, especialmente no Brasil.…”

“…Because they provide specialized life forms, caves are considered extreme environments (Candiroglu, 2017). Although their peculiarities are an attraction for new biotechnological studies, they are rarely studied from the microbiological point of view, especially in Brazil.…”

“…Human-led exploration, data collection, and monitoring can be risky and is often based on opportunistic sampling and/or use of stationary recording devices (camera and/or sensors) to collect data at regular intervals ( Zwerts et al, 2021 ). Many locations that remain largely uncharted and challenging for humans including cave structures ( Candiroglu and Gungor, 2017 ), the ocean floor ( Beck Eichler and Barker, 2020 ), and extreme cold Arctic and Antarctic regions can provide important information on the ecosystem health. However, such locations present logistical complexities with limited infrastructure, restricted transportation options, and adverse environmental conditions that hinder comprehensive conservation endeavors.…”
