Cavernous Angiomas of the Skull

Abstract: The authors present a series of 25 cases of haemangioma of the skull and review the literature. Frontal localization was the most frequent, contrary to the data in the literature which suggest predominance in the parietal region. The reported predominance of females has not been confirmed. In the present series the relation of males to females was 17:8. The radiological findings and treatment of haemangiomas are discussed. Direct puncture and injection of contrast medium is the best method of visualization of … Show more

“…Usually, they are located in the vertebral column or in the skull. None were found in infants or very young children in the Mayo Clinic series, although, in a series of cavernous angiomas of the skull [Kirchhoff et al, 1978],28% had lesions at birth, but none had developmental anomalies of any kind. The significance of hemangiomatous bone in cloverleaf skulls remains unknown at present.…”

“…13,14) Therefore, the percentage occupied by vascular lumens in the lesion is overwhelmingly large compared with tumors such as meningioma. This sinusoid structure is clearly visualized on angiography by direct puncture as emphasized by Kirchhoff et al 12) Therefore, sclerotherapy by direct puncture is the optimal method to deliver the The lesion was completely resected.…”

“…However, concerning venous anomalies arising from the cranium (originally termed as "cavernous hemangiomas"), there have been reports that they were fed by the middle meningeal and superficial temporal arteries 10,11) and that the lesion was contrasted on angiography in about half the patients. 12) Venous anomalies arising from the cranium may have different properties compared with those arising from other sites. In the present case, also, the venous anomaly is considered to have originated from the diploe and was fed by the middle meningeal and anterior deep temporal arteries.…”
