Cavioids, Chinchilloids, and Erethizontoids (Hystricognathi, Rodentia, Mammalia) of the Early Miocene Pampa Castillo Fauna, Chile

Abstract: Caviomorph rodents became important components of South American faunas after their Eocene arrival from Africa. Here we describe the cavioid, chinchilloid, and erethizontoid caviomorphs of the early Miocene Pampa Castillo fauna of southern Chile. This fauna's age and location make it key for resolving outstanding biostratigraphic questions concerning early Miocene Patagonian fossiliferous strata. Each of the four major caviomorph clades ("superfamilies") is represented in the Pampa Castillo fauna, three whose m… Show more

“…We performed a hierarchical clustering analysis including the Pampa Castillo rodent fauna as a whole (considering the data of McGrath et al . 2022 a and this work) and 10 other Early–Middle Miocene rodent assemblages. Coupled with geochronological data, this analysis refines the understanding of the biochronology of Early and Middle Miocene South American mammal faunas.…”

“…Drawing together the description and analyses of other components of the entire Pampa Castillo rodent fauna (McGrath et al . 2022 a ), with the taxa discussed above, we considered this fauna's taxonomic similarities to roughly contemporaneous faunas from elsewhere, as described earlier. This was done to assess the chronological and/or palaeoenvironmental inferences that can be drawn from faunal similarity coefficients.…”
