CCD‐Type Sodium Ion Image Sensor: Dynamic Observation of Ion‐Exchange Reactions of a Single Na‐Type Cation‐Exchange Resin Bead

Abstract: A new sodium ion image sensor containing a CCD-type semiconductor and a plasticized PVC sodium ion selective membrane was developed. The output potential slope was linear for sodium ion concentrations from 10 À1 to 10 À5 M. The optimum membrane possessed a near Nernstian response and high selectivity to sodium ions. The sensor can take sodium ion images with a fast response, 0.2 s per image, allowing it to easily monitor the ion-exchange reactions of a single Na-type cation-exchange resin bead. It was found th… Show more

“…The number of pixels and their density have been increased: 32 × 32 pixels with a pitch of 130 μm, (29) 128 × 128 pixels with a pitch of 23 μm, (30) and 1024 × 1024 pixels with a pitch of 12.1 μm (31) have been reported. In addition to pH, the concentration of other ions such as K + (29) and Na + (32) and biomolecules such as acetylcholine (33,34) have been measured by modifying of the sensor area. A multimodal sensor, which simultaneously measures an optical image and a pH image, was also proposed.…”

“…An interdisciplinary example of the application of the ion-selective PVC membrane is the ion sensors based on field effect transistor (FET) 4,5 and charge-coupleddevice (CCD). [6][7][8][9] These ion sensors based on microelectronic devices measure the change of the surface potential of the sensing region due to the ion concentration in the solution as a shift in the drain current or voltage, and as a quantity of electric charges, respectively. The PVC membranes incorporating ionophores convert the ion concentration in the bulk solution to the surface potential change depending on the binding constant between the ionophore and its target ion.…”

“…These chemical imaging tools are devices that not only determine quantity, but also acquire label-free images of the local distribution of ions and chemical species in liquid solution with real-time. So far, semiconductor-based chemical imaging sensors are allowed to image not only hydrogen ions but also other ions (e.g., Li + , Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cd 2+ ) [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] and chemical species (e.g., glucose and penicillin) [20][21][22][23][24][25] in solution, by only using an additional selective membrane on the sensor surface.…”
