CD-15 Antigen Detected by the VIM-D5 Monoclonal Antibody for Prediction of Ability to AchieveComplete Remission in Acute Nonlymphocytic Leukemia

Abstract: The prognostic value of cell differentiation antigens detected with the monoclonal antibodies of VI series was studied in 242 cases of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia (ANLL) treated in 7 cooperating centers. A significantly higher complete remission rate was observed in patients with a higher expression of CD-15 antigen detected by VIM-D5 antibody than in those with lower values. These significant differences were proved when comparing subgroups with VIM-D5 positivity of blastic cells < 15 and > 15% (p < 0.01)… Show more

“…In our previous studies we showed that the expression of CD 15 provides prognostic information on the probability of achieving CR [4]. The present study confirms this observation in a larger group of 437 ANLL patients ( Table 1) and shows that the predictive significance of CD 15 expression is not associated with other risk factors.…”

“…Today, when a number of significant therapeutic options are available, an attempt should be made to individualize therapy and to use new, more aggressive therapies mainly in prognostically poor groups of patients who are identified with the use of prognostic indices. The potential utility of cell differentiation antigens as prognostic factors has been investigated to a limited extent mainly in ALL [2,7], but similar studies in ANLL are rare [1,3,4].…”

“…Studies relating blast cell phenotype to prognosis have been fewer, and again have yielded different results Holowiecki et al, 1986) which may be due in part to their multicentric nature. The present study details the results from a single centre using a panel of 3 1 mAbs; the blast cell immunophenotype is correlated with clinical and laboratory features at presentation, and with outcome.…”

“…Several studies have addressed the question of correlation between blast cell immunophenotype and FAB subtype in AML, and have arrived at conflicting conclusions (Drexler et al, 1986b; 0278-0232/90/0 10047-1 2 $06.00 0 1990 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
