Celebrating Two Centuries of Research in Selenium Chemistry: State of the Art and New Prospective

Abstract: In 2017, the 200th anniversary of the discovery of selenium was celebrated. In 1817, the Swedish chemists, Berzelius and Gahn, on roasting 200 kg of sulfur from a pyrite from the Falun mine, obtained about 3 g of a precipitate that they first wrongly identified as tellurium. Berzelius doubted this result and repeated the analysis some months later realizing that a new element was in his hands and he named this element Selenium (Greek: Selene, moon) in consideration of its resemblance to Tellurium (Latin: Tellu… Show more

“…Selenium was discovered by Berzelius in 1817, which plays vital roles in humans with functions in preventing cancer, boosting immunity, detoxifying cells, and even in combatting COVID-19 infections (Santi and Bagnoli, 2017 ; Moghaddam et al, 2020 ; Zhang et al, 2020 ). Selenium is generally beneficial for plants in appropriate concentrations and has been found to influence photosynthesis (Jiang et al, 2017 ), root architecture (Zhao et al, 2019 ), senescence (Hajiboland et al, 2019 ), vegetable quality (Mckenzie et al, 2019 ), defense, and stress response (Alves et al, 2020 ; Wen, 2021 ).…”

“…Se deficiencies have also been associated with negative effects on embryo development [2,3,4]. Nowadays, researchers are working on new strategies for the normalization of this microelement level [2,3,5] and the possibilities of using Se in the creation of new drugs [6,7].…”

“…Indeed, prenyl chains have been selected from an evolutionary point of view as key determinants in the functions of a plethora of cell substructures, from bacteria to eukaryotes, that comprise mammals [ 27 ]. Secondly the coumarin nucleus is suggested by numerous literature data to be a versatile scaffold in drug design and discovery and a structural determinant for pharmacological activities [ 28 ]. Finally, the selenium atom, bridging the aforementioned moieties, may contribute to the overall effects thanks to the known activities (e.g., antioxidant) ascribed in the literature to selenoethers [ 29 ].…”
