Celiac disease in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Objectives Celiac disease (CD) is one of the most common chronic diseases. Celiac disease has been associated with several autoimmune disorders, but the association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) as a systemic autoimmune disease is still controversial. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of biopsy-proven CD in patients with SLE, and to determine the clinical symptoms and laboratory data in these patients. Material and methods In a cross-sectiona… Show more

“…An Israelian study based on a large medical database compared 5,018 patients with SLE and 25,090 age-and sex-matched controls and reported an association between SLE and CD with a multivariate OR of 3.92 [51]. Conversely, other studies found no association between SLE and CD [52,53] Very recently, a study by Soltani et al, including both adults and children (without any specific age-related analysis), reported a prevalence of 3% for biopsy-proven CD in patients with SLE and, thus, revamped this issue [54].…”

“…22 In contrast, biopsy proven-celiac disease prevalence in SLE patients is reported to be around 3%. 23 Interestingly, celiac disease might be diagnosed several years before SLE diagnosis, as reported in another study. 24 All these associations (IBD and SLE or celiac disease and SLE) show that there is a combination of many factors (genetic predispositions, environmental impact, diet, immunological disorders) that can explain the coexistence of these diseases.…”

“…Based on isolated case reports, some authors have suggested that ocular manifestations might be a presenting symptom of SLE [ 1 , 3 , 5 , 13 , 17 , 20 ]. As stated previously, the literature on the subject is limited to patients already being treated for SLE, and therefore this conclusion is not backed by evidence.…”
