Cell-Set Modelling for a Microtab Implementation on a DU91W(2)250 Airfoil

Abstract: Microtabs (MTs) are a regularly used flow control device in terms of wind turbine optimization. The present study introduces the application of the novel cell-set model for an MT implementation on a DU91W(2)250 airfoil. The cell-set model is based on the reusability of a mesh to add new geometries on the domain; the matching geometry is located where the user requires, and a set of cells is constructed around the mentioned geometry. Subsequently, wall boundaries are assigned to the generated region. Computatio… Show more

“…In that work, different Gurney flaps were added to the TE of a DU91W(2)250 airfoil by means of the cell-set model. In further studies, Ballesteros-Coll et al 7 , 8 implemented microtabs and rotating microtabs on the same airfoil. Other authors, such as Portal-Porras et al 9 , 10 used this meshing technique to model the performance of three-dimensional Vortex Generators (VG) on a flat plate.…”

“…Besides the advantages that the cell-set model provides over the fully resolved mesh model, there are not many studies in which this model has been applied. Ballesteros-Coll et al [21,27] used the cell-set model to generate Gurney flaps and microtabs on DU91W250 airfoils, and Ibarra-Udaeta et al [28] modelled conventional vane-type VGs with this model.…”

“…Ibarra-Udaeta et al [20] and Portal-Porras et al [21] used the CS model to construct vortex generators and sub-boundary layer vortex generators, respectively. Ballesteros-Coll et al [22] used the CS model to generate a Gurney flap on the trailing edge of a DU91W250 airfoil and implemented a microtab on the trailing edge of a DU91W(2)250 airfoil [23]. All of them demonstrated a good performance with this novel flow control device implementation model.…”

“…The method was firstly introduced in Ballesteros-Coll et al [22] where the CS model was validated against fully mesh data for the implementation and optimization of a Gurney flap (GF) on the DU91W250 and DU97W300 airfoils. A recent study carried out by Ballesteros-Coll et al [23] illustrates the performance of the CS method for active MT implementation with variable length. The model reached a global relative error of e g = 3.784% in comparison with the fully mesh model.…”
