Cell tracking using multimodal imaging

Abstract: In vivo imaging plays a key role in cell tracking, particularly for the optimization of cellular therapeutics. A recent trend is to use more than one imaging modality (multimodality imaging) for this purpose. There are several advantages to multimodal cell tracking, particularly the corroboration of data obtained using a new imaging agent or technique with an established one, and the ability to glean complementary information from a single experiment. In this review, we examine the different types of labels an… Show more

“…5 Copyright: American Scientific Publishers enormous attention due to its analytic and diagnostic ability at the molecular or cellular level. 13 As a result, a new discipline, known as "molecular imaging," 14 which combines molecular biology and in vivo imaging, has emerged. Representative imaging platforms include computed X-ray tomography (CT), 15 optical tomography (DOT), 16 a noninvasive emerging imaging modality, that makes use of the light in the near-infrared spectrum, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 17 positron emission tomography (PET), 18 single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT), 19 and ultrasound, 20 as well as combinations of the same.…”

“…The evaluation of their homing capacities was carried out by bioluminescence imaging method (BLI). As an emerging in vivo cell tracing method, BLI has the advantages of high specificity and sensitivity and most importantly, it can visualize cells’ dynamic migrating process by successive imaging1415. Thus, it could provide us more detailed and objective information about DCs’ homing process before and after cryopreservation.…”

“…Multimodal imaging allows the collection of complementary information from a single experiment. Therefore, it permits taking advantage of a technique's specific strengths, avoiding individual disadvantages, and thus improving single monitoring techniques (De Vocht et al 2012;Srinivas et al 2013;Tang et al 2015;Wolfs et al 2014). BLI, PET, and SPECT show higher sensitivities but lower resolutions than MRI.…”

“…This can be achieved by applying either one CA that can be detected by different imaging modalities or a combination of different labeling agents (Srinivas et al 2013). Multimodal imaging allows the collection of complementary information from a single experiment.…”
