Cell Types of the Pars distalis of the Hedgehog (<i>Erinaceus europaeus</i> L.) Adenohypophysis: Cytological, Immunocytochemical and Ultrastructural Studies

Abstract: Staining and histochemical methods, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy were used to individualize the somatotropic cells in the adenohypophyseal pars distalis of the non-hibernating hedgehog. One cell-type was differentiated; their characteristics at the light and electron microscopic levels were presented. Immunofluorescence has confirmed the functional significance of this cell-type and the validity of the denomination ‘somatotropic cells’.

“…Another cell population which was immunonegative for hypophyseal glycoprotein hormones could be characterized by expression of the S-100 protein [Girod et al, 1986]. However, this study could only demonstrate a few S-100-positive cells in the Pt and Pd whereas a lot of cells remained unstained.…”

“…Some cells can be marked with antibodies against S-100 protein, other cells with vimentin. Therefore, the existence of different subpopulations must be considered [Girod et al, 1986;Kameda, 1996a, b]. (3) In the last years special interest was focussed on Pt-specific cells which are not comparable to any other cell type of the Pd.…”
