Cell Wall Membrane Fraction of Chlorella sorokiniana Enhances Host Antitumor Immunity and Inhibits Colon Carcinoma Growth in Mice

Abstract: A colon cancer growth inhibitor partially purified from the isolated cell wall membrane fraction of Chlorella sorokiniana, here referred to as Chlorella membrane factor (CMF), was evaluated for its antitumor and immunomodulatory effects in cell culture and in a colon carcinoma mouse model. The CMF treatment dose- and time-dependently inhibited colon carcinoma cell growth in 2-dimensional cultures. Treatment with CMF also significantly inhibited the growth of colon carcinoma spheroids in 3-dimensional cell cult… Show more

“…and anticancer activities have been proven in the mouse colon carcinoma cell line CT26.CL25, and the following human colon carcinoma cell lines: SW620, HT29, COLO 205 and Caco-2 [6]. Additionally, stimulation of cytokines release and nitrogen oxide production in macrophages cell line RAW264.7, in response to polysaccharides of green alga Chlorella ellipsoidea, have been reported [7,8].…”

“…Lutein, a compound with proven anti-cataract properties, is also found in Chlorella sp. , while its extracts exhibit anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial properties, and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels [ 32 , 33 , 34 ]. As a result, Chlorella sp.…”

“…Moreover, the immunostimulatory effects of β-1,3 have been widely studied for cancer treatment [ 1 , 15 , 16 ]. Anticancer activities of extracts of some single-celled algae may also be linked to β-1,3 glucans [ 17 ].…”
